Apart from the Taj, Agra also boasts of a number of historic monuments which includes the Agra Fort, Jama Masjid, Chinni-ka-Roza, Itmad-ud-Daulah’s Tomb, Radhaswamy Samadhi and Rambagh, each of which are embellished with bewilderingly intricate inlay works on marble.
The magnificent structure that stands second in importance in this historic city is the Agra Fort, built by the great Mughal emperor Akbar in 1565 AD. The fort houses a number of exquisitely beautiful buildings like the Diwan-i-Am, Diwan-i-Khas, Jahangir’s Palace, Khaas Mahal and Sheesh Mahal.
Built by Empress Noor Jahan in 1625 AD in memory of her father Ghias-ud-din-Beg, Imtiaz-ud-Daulah’s Tomb is another ornate structure. The richly decorated Akbar’s Tomb, also known as Sikandara, is another impressive structure of the city. Miriam was one of Akbar’s wives and her tomb in the vicinity is worth a visit. Allama Afzal Khal was Shah Jahan’s prime minister and a great poet and scholar. His tomb, popularly known as Chinni-ka-Roza, is another highly ornamented building of the Mughal era worth visiting.
The immensely decorated Radhaswamy Samadhi in Dayalbagh was built in memory of the founder of the Radhaswamy sect. This edifice is also worth visiting.
