THE ORANGE BACK FAIRY WRASSE

Image
THE ORANGE BACK FAIRY WRASSE The Orange Back Fairy-Wrasse, Cirrhilabrus aurantidorsalis , is a species of Wrasse endemic to the Pacific waters of Indonesia. It inhabits coral reefs and can be found at depths from 10 to 25 m. This species can reach a total length of 10 cm. The Orange Back Fairy Wrasses are like many Wrasses in the way that they live in harems of many females in a group with only one male. The male is the dominant fish with the stronger colours and traits. There have been no small males that have been recorded so it is believed that all Orange Back Fairy Wrasses begin as females and then some females transform into males. The Cirrhilabrus species eats mainly Zooplankton. They have a pair of teeth in the front and a set of teeth wrapped around the side which is used to break down their food. Orange Back Fairy Wrasses are found in shallow waters mainly ranging from 10 to 75 feet but can also be found in deeper waters. When the Fairy Wrasses remain in deeper dept...

LONGHORN COWFISH The Longhorn Cowfish, also called the Horned Boxfish, is a species of boxfish from the family Ostraciidae , recognized by its long horns that protrude from the front of its head rather like those of a cow or bull. They are a resident of the Indo-Pacific region and can grow up to 50 cm long. Adults are reef fish, often solitary and territorial, and live around sand or rubble bottom up to a depth of 50 m. They are omnivorous, feeding upon benthic algae, various microorganisms and foraminiferans that it strains from sediments, sponges, polychaete worms from sand flats, mollusks, small crustaceans and small fish, benthic invertebrates by blowing jets of water into the sandy substrate. If severely stressed, this species may be able to exude a deadly toxin, pahutoxin, an ichthyotoxic, hemolytic, heat-stable, non-dialyzable, non-protein poison that is present in the mucous membranes of their skin. It is apparently unique among known fish poisons; it is toxic to...
