SOURAV CHANDIDAS GANGULY
Sourav Chandidas Ganguly, affectionately known as Dada, is an Indian cricket administrator, commentator and former national cricket team captain who is the 39th and current president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India. Ganguly established himself not only as one of the world's leading batsmen but also as one of the most successful and intelligent captain of the Indian national cricket team. While batting, he was especially prolific through the off side, earning himself the nickname “God of the Off Side” for his elegant stroke play square of the wicket and through the covers.
Ganguly got his big-break while playing for India on their tour of England. He scored 131 runs in his very debut and cemented his place in the Indian cricket team. Ganguly's place in the team was further assured after successful performances in series against Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Australia, winning various ‘Man of the Match’ awards. In the 1999 Cricket World Cup, he was involved in a partnership of 318 runs with Rahul Dravid, which remains the highest overall partnership score in the World Cup tournament history till today. Ganguly was made the captain of the Indian cricket team in 2020. He was subject of severe media criticism for taking off his shirt in the final of the 2002 NatWest Series but everyone understood later that it was one of those moments that all players of all sports play for – winning an almost defeated match. He also led India into the 2003 World Cup final where they were ultimately defeated by Australia in a nail biting finish.
On 29 October 2012, he announced that he has decided not to play any further and retire from the game. Though he was time and again peeved by a section of the then officials of the BCCI in a roundabout way through the then Indian cricket coach Greg Chappell and later by John Buchanan, then coach of Kolkata Knight Riders for various reasons, no one could however decline the fact that Ganguly is a genius of his kind. Today, ironically, he is the President of that very organization. He was adorably nicknamed by Geoff Boycott as ‘The Prince of Calcutta’.
Today Sourav
Ganguly is the co-owner of the ISL football team Atlético de Kolkata.
