BARNAWAPARA WILDLIFE SANCTUARY


Fed mainly by the tributaries of River Mahanadi, this 245 sq km area of mixed deciduous forests over a surging terrain is a relaxed wildlife sanctuary housing a large variety of flora and fauna. Hemmed by the River Balmdehi in the west and River Jonk in the northeast, the virid flora of the sanctuary consists mainly of Teak, Sal and Bamboo punctuated by a conspicuous presence of dazzling white Kuku trees. Tiger, Leopard, Indian Wild Dog, Striped Hyena, Fox, Jungle Cat, Sloth Bear, Porcupine and Barking Deer mainly forms the faunal population of the sanctuary. The avian residents of the sanctuary is also interesting with a noticeable presence of Peafowl, Jungle Fowl, Lesser Whistling Teal, Racket Tailed Drongo, Crimson Breasted Barbet, Red Vented Bulbul, Crow Pheasant, Magpie, Robin, Pintail, Shoveller, Egret and Heron.

Accessibility: 105kms northeast of Raipur, the sanctuary can be reached by car. Lying on the Kolkata – Nagpur railway line, Raipur is well connected by rail from Kolkata and Mumbai.

Accommodation: Visitors can stay inside the Park in Forest Rest Houses.

Season: November to May.
