NAMDHAPA NATIONAL PARK


Deriving its name from the meandering Nao Dihing River that flows through the Park, the unblemished virgin beauty of the Namdhapa National Park with the sound of the rapids and murmuring winds, interrupted by the gleeful hooting of the Hoolok Gibbons, is captivating. Time, in this little Shangri-La, comes to a standstill. Sandwiched between Myanmar on its eastern and southern boundaries with the Patkai Mountain Range and the eastern end of the Himalayan foothills, the Park spreads over an area of 1850sq kms of rugged terrain between an altitude bracket of  200 feet to 4500 feet and is home to an exotic variety of tropical and alpine flora and fauna.

 

Namdhapa is a botanists’ dream. The enchanting and wild diversity of the floral species of the Park comprehensively forms a multi-storied structure. The lower reaches of the Park represents tropical wet evergreen forests, the middle tier represents mixed deciduous forests, while the upper strata represents temperate alpine forests. There are more than 150 species of timber found in the Park with the Pinus Merkusi and the Abies Delavani found only here. Rarest of rare orchids grow here, including the endangered Blue Vanda. The famous medicinal plant Mishmi Teeta, believed to cure all sorts of diseases, also grows here.

 

The avian species found in the Park include Great Indian Hornbill, Spotted Owl, Forest Eagle Owl, Kaleej Pheasant, Peacock Pheasant, Monal Pheasant, Trogopan, White Winged Wood Duck, Minivet, Parrot, and White Crow. Almost 400 species of Butterflies also add colour to the Park. The vast variety of wildlife include Elephant, Gaur, Sambar, Malayan Sambar, Hog Deer, Barking Deer, Goral, Binturong, Himalayan Black Bear, Mishmi Takin, Himalayan Red Panda, Lesser Panda, Slow Loris, Hoolok Gibbon and a large number of arboreal animals, mainly, 5 species of monkeys and 6 species of squirrels. The Park is only one of its kinds in the world where all the four big cats are found together – Tiger, Leopard, Clouded Leopard and Snow Leopard. It is also home to a large number of Leopard Cats and Fishing Cats. The Park is also a major Tiger Reserve in India.

 

Accessibility: The Park is approachable by road from Dibrugarh in Assam, which is 163kms away.

Accommodation: Forest Rest Houses are available inside the Park. Tourist Lodge and Government Guest Houses are also available at Miao.

Season: October to April.
