KANCHENDZONGA NATIONAL PARK

The vast expanse of the Kanchendzonga National Park is composed of rich natural forests with a variant altitude. The lower reaches of the Park have moist deciduous forests while the upper reaches have alpine forests. The northern most boundary of the Park is marked by the famous Zemu Glacier, which gives birth to the Zemu River, which ultimately flows down into the mighty River Teesta. The western boundary of the Park is the Indo-Nepal border and is dotted with some of the world’s most famous peaks such as Mt. Kanchendzonga, Mt. Pandim and Mt. Sinialchu. The Park preserves about 650 species of plants, 250 species of flowers, 600 species of orchids, 550 species of birds and 600 species of butterflies. The affluent wildlife of the Park consists of Clouded Leopard, Snow Leopard, Himalayan Black Bear, Red Panda, Binturong, Goral, Seru and Musk Deer. The Park can be approached only by trekking.

Accessibility: Yuksom, the gateway to the Park, is 140kms from the town of Siliguri in the neighbouring state of West Bengal, which in turn has excellent air, rail and road connections. The Park is approached by a 5kms trek from Yuksom.

Accommodation: Forest Rest Houses and Trekkers’ Huts are available inside the Park. There are also a few Hotels in Yuksom.

Season: April to May and August to October.
